Kyushu TLO Company, Limited - Live monitoring supports the Sefuri ranch operation / Japan
Kyushu TLO Company, Limited evolves its businesses around industry-university-government collaborating projects, such as licensing intellectual asset of Kyushu University, consulting practice as Kyushu University related organization, regional innovation businesses, and setting up entrepreneurial ventures based on the study outcome of Kyushu University. Taking initiative, Kyushu TLO is working on beef breeding business based in Sefuri ranch located in Fukuoka city, getting advice from Agriculture Research Institute of Kyushu University regarding cattle grazing and high grade beef production.
In the farming, managing livestock is non-stop work by day and night regardless of whether condition. From the efficiency point of view, only the limited number of staffs is hired, and to make it possible for them to monitor vast rolling ranch in a harsh natural environment, installation of the network cameras is essential.
Also, a remote monitoring system via Internet is adopted so that Mr. Maeda, President of Kyushu TLO and specialists from Kyushu University can monitor the ranch remotely.
The cameras will play a vital role reducing staff's burden at calving where watch over by night is required.
The Sefuri ranch is located on the outskirts of Fukuoka city. Even though it is not located near the city center, Youth Nature Hall, a people gathering facility, is next to the ranch. In such an environment, Mr. Maeda is considering the necessity of installing a security measure, since the ranch owns a variety of tools and equipment including pasture fences and feed scattered in the area, not to mention the presence of cows.
PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) function equipped network cameras are installed on the columns of observation deck from where a major part of the ranch can be overlooked. In the barn, dairy scenes such as feeding are captured by the cameras, and also tasks that are important for management, such as checking up body temperature, mating, and calving are observed. Via an Internet connected external server, the specialists from Kyushu University can remotely monitor the barn and provide advices. Also, the wall-installed fixed camera integrated with outdoor use housing monitors the cows in the main grazing land.
All cameras can be checked and operated through the PC installed in the office. One of the staff reported, "Panasonic cameras enable bright and clear monitoring of inside the barn after the sun has set."
Why Panasonic product is selected
Panasonic Network Cameras is capable of capturing bright clear images in a low light condition. According to Mr. Maeda, Panasonic camera was appealing when considering installation of cameras in outdoor or half-outdoor space in the ranch. Especially Panasonic camera's wide range of view under limited lighting offered a distinct availability compared to other products. Also, the characteristics of Sefuri ranch provided advantageous conditions for use of Panasonic cameras: the ranch is rolling, but it has an observation deck and the main grazing land is spread right front of the deck. Therefore a fewer number of cameras can cover the required area if Pan/Tilt/Zoom camera is used in combination with fixed network camera integrated with outdoor use housing.
Panasonic camera has been received a high evaluation for its durability for longer operating period under harsh conditions. In addition, for WV-SPW611J, a model equipped with a dehumidifying device compliant with IP66, it is said "Stable operation is promising even in the nature environment at 700 meter elevation".
